Diabetes and its Unique Impact on Women!

Diabetes, a chronic condition affecting blood sugar regulation, impacts both men and women, but women may experience some specific symptoms. Approximately one in nine adult women in the U.S. has diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Impact on Women:

  • Oral and Vaginal Thrush:

High blood sugar levels can increase the risk of yeast infections in the mouth and vagina. Symptoms include sore skin, vaginal discharge, itching, painful sex, and a white coating on the tongue.

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):

Women with diabetes are more susceptible to UTIs. A 2015 review found that 12.9% of women developed a UTI within a year of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, compared to 3.9% of men. UTI symptoms include painful urination, cloudy or bloody urine. Prompt treatment is crucial to avoid complications like kidney infections.

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS):

Women with diabetes are at a higher risk for PCOS, a condition where hormonal imbalances affect egg release and fertility. Symptoms of PCOS include irregular menstrual cycles, acne, depression, fertility issues, weight gain, and skin changes.

Women diagnosed with PCOS should consider discussing diabetes screening with their healthcare provider. For further information and testing, consult a medical professional.
